Real Estate Company Sues to Block US Open Parking on Long Island Property

A Delaware-based real estate company is suing the town of Riverhead to prevent the use of a 16-acre leased parcel for US Open parking, arguing the 2001 easement agreement restricted the land to aircraft parking only. The USGA had arranged to park nearly 19,000 vehicles on the property for the tournament at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, scheduled for June 18-21. Riverhead's town attorney expressed confidence the dispute would be resolved and would not impact US Open parking arrangements.
Delaware-based 400 David Court LLC filed a lawsuit against the town of Riverhead over a 16-acre parcel, claiming the town violated a 2001 easement agreement by allowing the United States Golf Association to use the land for US Open parking instead of aircraft parking. The USGA had negotiated a deal with Riverhead in January to park approximately 18,900 vehicles and shuttles on the property for a $150,000 fee to transport spectators to Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. The complaint alleges the USGA has already caused irreparable damage to the property during preparation and seeks to enforce the original agreement, remove the "trespassers," and obtain compensation. However, Riverhead Town Attorney Eric Howard stated after a court meeting that the two sides appeared to have reached an agreement resolving the immediate disputes, and he did not anticipate the parking arrangements would be negatively impacted. The US Open is scheduled to begin June 18 at Shinnecock Hills, one of the five founding clubs of the USGA.
What's missing
The specific terms of the agreement reached between Riverhead and 400 David Court LLC were not disclosed, leaving the resolution unclear. Additionally, the USGA's response to the lawsuit and the company's position on the damage claims were not obtained.
